The main ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) has postponed its internal elections to November.
The PNC had been scheduled to hold its elections on October 19. But in a statement on Friday, the party announced that it has been postponed to November 9.
The deadline for candidacy has been extended to 06:00 pm on October 24.
PNC said it postponed the elections at the request of many interested candidates.
In its internal elections, the PNC will elect 2,095 officials. This includes:
According to Elections Commission (EC)’s records, the PNC has 28,893 members as of September 19 – making it the country’s third largest party.
PNC aims to boost membership numbers to 75,000 by the end of November, which will make it the country’s biggest political party.
The main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) remains the biggest political party in the Maldives with 50,980 members.
