The Ministry of Transport on Monday, has ordered Male' City Council stop issuing parking slots on rent to solve the prevailing parking constraints in Male' region.
The ministry in an announcement said it has informed the council not to issue such slots from any area of Male' region effective immediately.
Additionally, the ministry demanded not to renew rented parking slots after their current period expires.
Transport Ministry further said the decision reflects government's objectives of providing parking areas for the public in an equal fashion. The ministry added the decision also addresses parking constraints and its associated difficulties faced by public in the Greater Male' area.
A total of 1,000 parking slots were opened up for renting during incumbent President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's tenure as the city's mayor.
During his mayoral tenure, Muizzu said the most beneficial method is by building mixed-parking structures in the region, but added such an initiative is difficult within the council's budget exclusively.
He added the slots were announced on rent as a temporary solution to parking issues.
