21-year-old injured in Male’ road accident dies

A young man involved in a road accident in Male’ died on early Sunday, mere days after he was admitted to the Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) with critical injuries.

A family member confirmed that Mohamed Leevan Abdul Latheef, 21, Jupiter, GDh. Gadhdhoo, died in the early hours of Sunday.

The accident took place at corner of Boduthakurufaanu Magu and Koimalaa Hingun in Male’ City at around 12:53 am Thursday, when the motorcycle Leevan was driving collided with a car.

He sustained critical injuries in the accident, and was treated on a ventilator at IGMH’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Leevan was the eldest of his parent’s two children, and worked at the Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO).

According to the family, the accident left Leevan braindead. His situation failed to improve and he died in the early hours of Sunday.

The Maldivian capital has seen a string of dangerous accidents in the past couple of days, two of which have resulted in fatalities.

On early Friday, 23-year-old Hassan Samah died after a speeding car crashed into him as he was driving his motorcycle near the Central Park in Hulhumale’. The unlicensed driver behind the wheels of the car has been jailed pending the outcome of his trial.

On Saturday morning, a motorcycle and car collided in an accident in Hulhumale’ Phase II, leaving the motorcyclist seriously injured.

And on Saturday night, a collision between two motorcycles near the Villa Petrol Shed in Hulhumale’ injured two people; a man and a woman.

1,907 traffic accidents have been reported to the police this year – an increase of 431 compared to the same period last year.

The increased accidents have raised concerns over the safety of the capital’s roads.
