Transport Minister affirms prompt action on President’s instructions for road safety

The Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen on Friday evening assured taking prompt action on implementing the strict measures instructed by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.

The minister said this in a social media message of condolence to the family of Hassan Samah, the young victim who passed away following a deadly accident near Central Park, Hulhumale’ on Friday early hours.

Minister Ameen in his social media post wished patience and strength to the victim’s family.

In his post, the minister assured collaborating with all relevant authorities towards legal reforms in ensuring stricter action and penalization against traffic violators; especially reckless driving.

Ameen assured prompt efforts for the amendment of traffic laws and regulations as well as stringent enforcement of the traffic laws and regulations. He urged for public support in ensuring road safety.

Hassan Samah, aged 23, who was visiting Greater Male’ area from K. Maafushi to attend the Dhiraagu Road Race event, died from the force of the impact after the bike he was riding was rammed by a speeding car.

Law enforcement authorities arrested 26-year-old Mohamed Wisham Sidhqee, from Addu City Hithadhoo, as the prime suspect in the case, who according to police, was driving without a valid license. He was presented to court, where a remand until sentencing was delivered on him.

Friday’s accident sparked widespread public outrage, mainly since it was the most recent in the recent accidents in Greater Male’ area which involved reckless driving and racing cars. Majority of the public have begun calling out for a ban on such vehicles.

Meanwhile, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu on Friday instructed to implement eight stringent measures to curtail reckless driving and speeding.
