Phase II race-car accident: Ikram’s receives 30-day remand

Ibrahim Ikram, the driver involved in the high-speed car crash at Hulhumale’ Phase II has been remanded for another 30 days, Maldives Police Service said.

The accident took place on July 31^st, which involved the out-of-control race car driven by Ikram at the time, and a parked motorcyclist who was thrown into air following the impact.

Videos of the accident, shared on social media platforms, show the car entering into a main road at brisk speed, loses control after it skids on a grass lane splitter, swerves further out of control, and then rams into the idle biker parked a few feet ahead. The biker was thrown into air from the momentum and landed a few feet away from where he was parked.

While it was reported that Ikram fled after the accident, he later claimed he was at the scene for sometime but left due to chest pains caused from the accident’s impact.

Police confirmed Ikram received a 30-day remand after he was presented to the court, which makes it his second remand hearing while he appealed his initial remand to the High Court citing his initial remand hearing was held in the absence of a lawyer.

The victim, a 27-year-old local man, received significant injuries including bone damages on his face due to the force of impact. He is currently being treated at the Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) ward.
