State-owned Fenaka Corporation has decided to dismiss temporary staff hired for construction-related works.

In a statement on Wednesday, Fenaka said they have decided to dismiss staff hired specifically for construction work on contract basis at various islands starting this month.

The company said they decided against renewing the contracts of “contract staff” hired for construction works that remain stalled due to various reasons back in December.

As per the company, its former management had hired 2,000 staff on “contract” basis for specific works, detailing 1,800 of them were hired for small tasks. In this regard, 731 staff were hired to build powerhouses and office buildings.

Fenaka, underscoring approximately MVR 7 million to MVR 9 million is incurred monthly to pay the salaries of the contract staff, stressed such a large expense was not feasible in light of the current financial state of the company.

The company also noted that the staff had been paid their monthly salaries despite 99 percent of the projects being at a halt when the current administration assumed office. Henceforth, they said the company, from hereon, will be contracting parties instead of hiring staff on a contract basis for projects.

Earlier this year, a protest was held in HA. Dhidhdhoo raising concern over the dismissal of Fenaka staff.
