Financial compensation has been awarded in a case involving the negligent death of a child who was treated at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH).

An official from the Attorney General’s Office told Sun that the parties involved agreed on a settlement agreement as it appeared in their best interests as the court process would be lengthy due to the nature of the case.

However, the official noted that the financial compensation was awarded at a lower amount than demanded by the child’s family. No further details were disclosed by the official, citing the agreement, reached between IGMH and the child’s family, included a non-disclosure provision. The official also noted that the family wishes to keep the information confidential as it is a personal matter.

Previous cases of injuries and deaths of children as a direct result of negligence by hospitals have come to light in the Maldives.
