Independence Day parade scheduled for Friday evening

The Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) is set to hold the traditional ‘Walk of Honor’ on the streets of the capital on Friday, in celebration of Maldives’ 59th Independence Day.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu will kick off the parade from in front of the Bandaara Koshi at 04:15 pm Friday.

Soldiers will make five stops along the way.

The stops will be made:

  • In front of the parking zone in Ameer Ahmed Magu;
  • In front of the Dhivehi Bahuge Academy in Sosun Magu;
  • At the Chandhanee Magu-Majeedhee Magu junction;
  • In front of the Million Bookshop in Majeedhee Magu; and
  • At the north-west corner of Kalhuthukkalaa Koshi in Boduthakurufaanu Magu

A two-hour ban on motorized vehicles will be in effect in Male’ from 04:00 pm to 06:00 pm Friday.

The Independence Day usually sees a float parade and additional celebrations. However, President Muizzu decided to downscale celebrations this year as part of new austerity measures.
