Male’ City Mayor has urged political leaders to proactively assess the living conditions of Greater Male’ citizens.

He urged political leaders to visit and assess the living conditions of the people they serve, instead of relaxing in their offices.

At the press conference held by the City Council regarding housing issues in Greater Male’ area, the city’s Mayor Adam Azim said the state needs to expedite its efforts for permanent solutions since the public has been living in plighted conditions.

Azim said one of the chief responsibilities for him is to address the housing concerns, and put efforts to resolve the matter.

The council is expected to convene on Wednesday next week to discuss on the housing issues, after which it would be submitting its decisions to the Ministry of Housing.

Male’ City Mayor assured their discussions would ensure the rights of every citizen residing in the Greater Male’ area would be protected.

“It is not enough that we are living comfortably with high paying jobs. We need to step out of our comfort zone and to evaluate the living conditions of the people. All elected officials need to do this, to come out and check for themselves,” Azim said.

Azim urged the government to disclose the details related to housing initiatives to the public.

Besides the Mayor, several associations advocating for housing solutions have expressed their concerns as well, including Fahi Union which added that the lack of social housing for the public is a prevailing issue and said the continued delays to resolve the matter was concerning.

The union further said it is hopeful the administration will fulfill President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s pledge of providing affordable housing for everyone within the next five years.

With eight months into the current administration, the lack of updates about the recent social housing recipients was another concern, the union added.

Male’ Rahvehinge Jamiyya, Giraavaru Male’ Rahvehinge Association, Gulhifalhu Rayyithunge Jamiyya and Hulhumale’ Community had shared their concerns with ‘Sun’ online as well.

The unions expressed their support for the Ras Male’ project, and called the state to expedite initiatives to resolve the housing crisis.
