New generation responsible for tourism development, but pioneers can't be sidelined

Maldives’ tourism sector which began with just 22 guests now accounts for approximately USD 4 million per year. The pioneers of the tourism industry, who still remain very much involved, had played the most crucial role in the development of the multimillion-dollar industry which serves as the backbone of the Maldivian economy. While the new generation stands to take over this responsibility, there is no leeway to discard the invaluable experience and advice which the pioneers bring in.

The current administration is presently undertaking efforts to formulate new laws and regulations to govern the tourism industry as it diversifies from its initial position as a luxury destination to one with affordable offerings via local tourism.

In this regard, the Tourism Ministry has commenced work on a law specific for travel operators and agencies. As part of these efforts, the Ministry met with stakeholders from the industry seeking their opinion. Photos of the meeting shared by the Ministry show that it was attended by none other than Crown Company’s Director Hussain Afeef, a pioneer of the Maldivian tourism industry who has made significant contributions to the industry over the years.

While commenting on the photos, some had expressed that the meeting should be more focused on travel agents and associations linked to travel agents. They also called upon the election of new leaders for Maldives Association of Tourism Industry (MATI) in place of the industry leaders who currently head the association.

Tourism Ministry told Sun that travel agencies and associations were invited to the meeting including Maldives Association of Travel Agents and Tour Operators (MATATO) and Association of Travel Agents (ATA).

As per the Ministry, they extended invitations to a total of 64 parties; most of which were travel agents.

MATI, which attended the meeting as a party that has made significant contributions to the Maldivian tourism industry, is accused of restricting local tour agencies from developing their businesses via resorts.

Afeef refuted these allegations, citing Crown and Champa presently has contracts with 35 tour agencies with whom they are working alongside.

He has previously remarked that youths now bear the responsibility of developing the tourism industry and in this trajectory, has expressed his confidence in them. He has also encouraged the integration of new technology and revolutions into the industry.

Another pioneer of the tourism industry, the owner of Universal and MATI’s Chairperson Mohamed Umar Manik has also reiterated the importance of youth’s involvement in taking the Maldivian tourism industry to a new level.

The development of each sector is linked to education and experience. The pioneers of the Maldivian tourism industry are ready to link the past of the industry to its future. Henceforth, instead of sidelining them, their experience and opinion can be leveraged for modern problems as well.

There is no doubt over the fact more youth need to take charge in the tourism industry. However, it should not be at the expense of sidelining the pioneers.
