Association comprising of local councils incepted to strengthen decentralization system

Maldives Local Councils Association (MLCA), an association comprising of local councils was incepted on Sunday as part of efforts to strengthen the decentralization system.

The association was inaugurated by Local Governance Minister Adam Shareef Umar during a ceremony held at B. Kamadhoo.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Minister Adam Shareef affirms the government’s commitment to provide full cooperation in all efforts necessary to strengthen the decentralization system.

He also appealed to local councils to undertake all efforts necessary to ensure the decentralization system is a system accepted by the public.

Minister Adam Shareef also expressed hope that work, which will benefit the general public, is carried out through the association incepted today.

MLCA is an association inception for collaborative work among councilors from city councils, atoll councils, and island councils from constituencies that hold membership of the association.

While efforts are underway to strengthen the decentralization system, Maldives National University has been tasked with carrying out a research in this trajectory. Minister Adam Shareef has previously remarked that reforms will be implemented to the decentralization system based on this research and public opinion.
