Three Somalians aboard washed up dinghy handed over to Immigration

Three Somalians aboard the dingy that washed up at Noonu Atoll island.

Maldives Police Service states that the three Somalians who were aboard the dinghy which washed up at Vavathi, an uninhabited island in Noonu Atoll, have been handed over to Hulhumale’ Immigration Facility.

The dinghy washed up on Vavathi on Saturday.  The three Somalians aboard the dinghy were provided temporary shelter at N. Hulhudhoo.

Police, in a message to the media on Wednesday, said the three of them have now been handed over to the Immigration Facility in Hulhumale’.

It was previously stated by the Police that the dinghy washed up on Vavathi after it was cast adrift.

No further details regarding the Somalians have been disclosed by the Police.

Photos shared by the Police show the dinghy and the three people, who were aboard the vessel, sitting on a bench.

They seemed to be in good health according to the photos.

Maldives is located east of Somalia. Boats with Somalians washing up in the Maldives after being cast adrift has been recorded previously as well. On one such occasion, a group of Somalians were housed at Dhoonidhoo under Police custody before being repatriated to their own country.
