The Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) has donated over MVR 2 million on Wednesday, during the launch of a nationwide telethon campaign to raise funds for Palestinians, as Israeli forces continue its devastating attacks on Gaza.
The telethon, conducted under the slogan “Falastheenaa Eku Dhivehin,” which translates to “Maldivians in Solidarity with Palestine,” was organized by the Public Service Media (PSM), in partnership with local media, including SSTV, at President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s request.
It began at 08:00 am on Wednesday, will continue until midnight.
The MNDF donated MVR 2,169,826.32 – the single biggest donation made during the telethon so far.
The donation was presented by Defense Minister Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon. He was accompanied by Chief of Defense Force Ibrahim Hilmy and Vice Chief of Defense Force Ahmed Ghiyas.

Speaking to PSM after making the donation, Ghassan noted that the telethon was being conducted at the initiation of President Muizzu, the Commander-in-Chief of the MNDF.
“The Maldivian military has responded alertly to the call by the President, the Commander-in-Chief of the MNDF. We are here to present the military’s contributions,” he said.
“We appeal to all beloved Maldivian people to help our beloved Muslim brothers and sisters in Palestine by contributing that you can within the time left until midnight.”
Government ministries, institutions and companies have also made generous donations during the telethon.

Donation boxes have been placed in 13 locations across the Maldivian capital. This includes;

The funds raised through the telethon will be sent to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), via the Foreign Ministry.
Israel’s current war on Gaza, which began on October 7, 2023, has killed more than 37,000 Palestinians, many of them women and children. It has also reduced much of the Palestinian territory to rubble, displaced the vast majority of residents, and resulted in widespread malnutrition.
