Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) on Thursday, announced it has reduced the pick-up charges for waste transfer in Greater Male' Area to MVR 500, while gate fee has been completely dropped.

The transfer charge, as a tipping fee per ton for waste transfers by private waste removers commercially, individuals, and SMEs was previously charged at MVR 750, while the gate fee to access transfer stations was at MVR 150.

WAMCO announced the fee reduction for the transfers, while the gate fee is now fully omitted.

The corporation decided to discontinue charging waste by weight until the weigh-bridges are installed in all of the transfer stations. The decision is effective as of May 14th, according to WAMCO's announcement.

Public littering in Greater Male' Area has increased in recent months. To curtail this, Male' City Council earlier began a fining initiative for public litterers.

The council had reported fining more than 180 individuals so far, out of which 80 percent are expatriates.

Besides this, WAMCO, in its bid to expand its services, launched clean-up of Male' Area roads and streets on May 02nd.
