Criminal Court has sentenced a suspect fleeing from Vilimale' Police Station for four months in jail.
The court on Sunday delivered the verdict, citing Mohamed Shaheen, from M. Mekona was charged with evasion from custody.
The state pressed charges against Shaheen for fleeing from Vilimale' Police station.
Shaheen was sentenced to be held in remand over a crime of which he was a suspect, around 16:00hrs on December 15, 2022. After he was taken to Vilimale' Police Station for his remand, he had fled from the station around 17:00hrs.
Prosecution submitted testimonials of two officers, audio and video recordings as evidence in the case.
One of the eyewitnesses, Sergeant Ibrahim Hameed said Shaheen was arrested for his suspected trespassing into a residence. When Shaheen was brought to Vilimale' Police Station, Hameed was manning the counter at the station's reception.
Shaheen had stepped up to the counter requesting a refill of his water bottle, which was provided by the station.
The Police Sergeant said Shaheen fled immediately after the officer received the empty water boll, and had made his way up to the Police Accommodation Block in Vilimale'. Sergeant Ibrahim further added that an off-duty officer near the accommodation block had witnessed Shaheen attempting to flee as well, and the two officers apprehended him.
Although Shaheen denies the allegations, the court held all the evidences submitted by the prosecution sufficiently proved his culpability.
The court sentencec Shaheen to jail for four months and 24 days.
