MDP: Ready to work alongside govt. despite disappointing results

Fayyaz Ismail, the chairperson of main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), has reaffirmed the party’s commitment to work event closes with the community following disappointing results in Sunday’s parliamentary election.

The preliminary results of Sunday’s election show that ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) and its coalition partners secured supermajority in the parliament – winning 70 seats. MDP, which holds the majority in the ongoing 19^th parliamentary assembly, only won 10 seats.

Fayyaz, in a post on X, congratulated all MDP candidates who secured seats in the 20^th parliamentary assembly. He also extended gratitude to all who worked tirelessly in MDP’s parliamentary campaign.

He also congratulated PNC on their victory, while expressing MDP MPs’ commitment to work alongside the government “for the betterment of our democratic values and to hold its accountable as a responsible opposition”. 

The parliamentary election held in 2019 during MDP’s second administration saw the party secure majority in the parliament with 65 seats. PPM-PNC which had been the opposition back then had only secured eight seats.
