Meedhoo MP, MDA’s leader Ahmed Siyam Mohamed, underscoring Maldives and India share not just proximity but also a shared vision for prosperity, has underscored the need to commit to fostering continued friendship.

Siyam made the remark in a post on X after some top officials of the government made derogatory comments regarding India on social media. The officials have since been suspended from their posts.

The comments were made after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted a video of him on a beach in Lakshadweep, captioning that a priority will be allotted to promote tourism in the islands of Lakshadweep.

In Siyam’s post – he reflected on the strong history of mutual assistance between the Maldives and India, particularly noting India was the first to recognize Maldives’ independence in 1965 and India’s timely and crucial support during the November 3, 1988 terror attack on the capital Male’ City.

Siyam noted that as neighbors sharing a maritime border – India continues to be a crucial partner in strategic, economic, and military cooperation.

“Committed to fostering a continued friendship, our nations share not just proximity but a shared vision for prosperity. We shall ensure our bilateral relations are nurtured and strengthened by regular contacts at all levels,” he added.
