Two Male’ City councilors signed to main ruling PNC on Friday night.
Both councilors presented their membership form to PNC’s leader, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu at the manifesto launching ceremony main ruling PNC’s mayoral candidate Azima Shakoor.
The councilors are North Henveiru constituency’s MDP councilor Aishath Nizleen Rasheed and Central Galolhu constituency’s The Democrats councilor Mariyam Reehan Nazim.
With their signing, ruling PPM-PNC coalition now holds Male’ City Council’s majority.
Three seats in the council remain vacant after councilors resigned to assume posts in the government. They are: South Henveiru seat, Central Henveiru seat and South Maafannu seat.
Alongside Male’ Mayoral by-election slated for next Saturday, election of new councilors for these seats will also proceed.
At Friday night’s ceremony, some youths who had previously been MDP members had also signed to PNC. Prior to this, 13 MDP MPs also left the party to join PNC.
As many new members continue to join PNC following their success in last year’s presidential election – the party’s chairperson Abdul Raheem Abdulla has previously remarked that the number of registered members have now exceeded 40,000.
