An abandoned newborn baby was discovered at AA. Dhigurah on Sunday morning.
Police said the discovery was reported to the authority at approximately 9:20am this morning.
They detailed that the baby was abandoned inside a bag at Dhighurah’s landfill. Citing doctors who examined the baby, the police said the baby was deceased at the time of discovery.
A team of police officers are presently active in Dhigurah to investigate the case.
No further details regarding the case have been disclosed so far, however, the police said the media will be updated following new developments.
Dhigurah Council President Ibrahim Usman said the baby was discovered inside a bag of waste collected from households and guesthouses on the island.
Usman noted that a waste management centre is in operation on the island – detailing the employees of the centre undertake efforts to destroy waste collected from households and guesthouses daily.
Usman said the baby was discovered while emptying waste bags collected from households and guesthouses back at the centre to destroy the waste.
He added that the centre had immediately reported the discovery of the baby to the council, which then reported the matter to the police.
Usman said he does not know the gender of the baby, nor whether the baby was born prematurely or not.
