Nashiz elected chair of Budget Committee with Rasheed as deputy

The Parliament has elected Kinbidhoo MP Mohamed Nashiz from MDP as the Chairman and Alifushi MP Mohamed Rasheed from MDP as the Deputy Chairman of the Budget Research Committee for next year.

This is the fourth year that the two MPs have been elected as the Chairman and Deputy Chairman of the Budget Committee.

MP Nashiz and MP Mohamed Rasheed were elected to the post at the Budget Research Committee meeting held today.

At the meeting, Dhaandhoo MP Yousuf Abdulla proposed Nashiz's name for the chairman of the committee. Nashiz was elected to the post by a majority approval of 15 members present on the committee.

Nashiz then proposed the name of Mohamed Rashid as Deputy Chairman. Mohamed Rasheed was elected by a majority approval of the 15 members present.

Nashiz chairs the Finance Committee while Mohamed Rasheed chairs the Economic Committee. The budget is studied by a special committee formed by cooperation between those two committees.

Today, Finance Minister Ibrahim Ameer presented the budget for next year. 

That’s a budget of MVR 49.5 billion for next year.

The budget has been delayed due to the no-confidence motion against former Speaker Mohamed Nasheed.

Minister Ameer has also not appeared in parliament earlier following the Attorney General's advice. But he have presented the budget today with the new Speaker of Parliament.
