In a first, separate gowns have been introduced for Maldives’ chief justice and Supreme Court justices to wear.
Prior to this, the chief judge and the Supreme Court justices did not wear gowns, specifically designed for them. While the chief judge wore a black gown with gold ribbon linings, the remaining Supreme Court justice wore black gowns with silver ribbon linings.
The new gowns introduced on Tuesday were designed to symbolize the culture and the history of the Maldives, in addition to the judiciary.

In this regard, the lacquerer work at the Friday Mosque in Male’ City was used as a sample while designing gold ribbon art on the gown, which represents Maldivian history and Islam.
The three stars and the scale on the gown represent justice and fairness and the independence of the judiciary.
The gown, as per the Supreme Court, will be worn during hearings and special occasions.
