High Court urges against spreading false rumors involving judges

High Court has appealed to the public against spreading false rumors regarding the works of the court and its judges.

In a statement on Friday, High Court said they have taken note of some people spreading false rumors and news through social media with respect to High Court’s works and judges which generates a negative outlook amongst the public.

The court stressed that the freedom of expression and freedom of the press guaranteed by laws of the Maldives also goes in line with respecting others and the society’s rights.

“Therefore, we urge and advise against spreading false news regarding the High Court’s administrative responsibilities and its work in fulfilling its responsibilities in a manner that generates a negative outlook amongst the public in violation of the stipulated laws and regulations,” the statement also read.

False news reports and rumors have seen a hike in recent days, as the nation prepares to vote in the runoff of the presidential election. Some foreign high commissions based in the Maldives have also denied various false accusations made against them – condemning such acts.

Maldives Media Council (MMC) has previously initiated efforts to combat the spread of false news.

However, MMC has not revealed whether any action has been taken against any news outlet to date.
