Over 9,000 apply to re-register for election runoff

Elections Commission (EC) says it has received over 9,000 applications, after voter re-registration for the second round of voting in the presidential election was opened on Friday.

EC’s secretary general Hassan Zakariyya said the figure was from Friday alone. He said that over 7,000 applications were sent online.

Zakariyya said that a lot of people had re-registered to vote in Male’.

Re-registration opened at 03:00 pm on Friday, and will continue until 03:00 pm on Sunday.

On Friday, EC’s vice chairman Ismail Habeeb said the commission will not extend re-registration.

He urged voters to re-register within the designated period.

In addition to online re-registration, physical re-registration forms can be submitted to local councils in the atolls, to the elections center in Dharubaaruge – in Male’, and to embassies in foreign countries.

282,395 people were eligible to vote in in the first round of voting – held on September 9. With 408 more people who will become 18 by September 30, total 282,803 people are eligible to vote in the runoff.
