President: Maldives will not go bankrupt; candidates must make sense

People who aspire to come to office must not talk nonsense, said President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Sunday, dismissing claims by some presidential candidates that the Maldives is on the verge of bankruptcy.

In a campaign rally in Th. Kinbidhoo, President Solih said that if the bankruptcy claim were true, then the candidates themselves would not have funds to run projects themselves, if they come to office.

“They say that this administration is bankrupt. That we have no funds,” he said.

President Solih said that rival candidates are making electoral pledges because they know the state is generating income.

He said that his own pledges are based on plans and guarantee of funding.

He said that the state is self-sufficient.

“They must make sense when they contest to become the country’s leader,” he said.

President Solih said that his rivals’ manifestos are flawed, and that they are simply reading off a list.
