9,887 applications to observe the election

Elections Commission (EC)’s vice chairperson Ismail Habeeb has revealed the commission received a total of 9,887 applications to observe the presidential elections slated for September 9th.

The deadline for applications expired on Thursday.

Habeeb, revealing the details of the applications, said 1,735 forms were received from individuals who wished to observe the elections as representatives from political parties. They include:

  • Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP): 458
  • Jumhoory Party (JP): 217
  • People’s National Congress (PNC): 548
  • Maldives National Party (MNP): 271
  • The Democrats: 241

4,545 forms were received to monitor the elections, while 3,607 applications were received to observe the elections.

Habeeb said efforts were underway to verify the authenticity of the forms.

Meanwhile, Habeeb, last Monday, said EC required an additional 500 individuals to serve as officials at voting centers.
