The main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) launched ‘Amaan Mujthamau’, the third policy on the party’s manifesto, and one focused on crime prevention.
The policy was unveiled by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih during a campaign rally in AA. Ukulhas on Thursday night.
The ‘Amaan Mujthamau’ policy, which translates to ‘Peaceful Community’, seeks to implement early intervention to prevent crime.
The policy covers awareness programs for school students, establishing a system where relevant institutions identify causes for crimes based on a family-centric approach, and identifying individuals vulnerable to involvement in criminal gangs, and running intervention programs for them, such as counselling, mentoring, and vocational training.

Through the policy, MDP plans to expand police service to all residential islands, launch city surveillance systems in all populous regions, introduce unmanned devices such as drones to stop drug trafficking, and make greater use of traffic enforcement technologies in populous islands.
The party plans to establish an ecosystem of technologies needed for cybersecurity and safety, and expand cyber protection, identify how gangs operate and enhance capacity to investigate gang-related crimes, and make legal changes needed to stop scam, fraud, and economic and financial crimes.
The party also plans to revise policies on parole, clemency and sentencing to offer alternative punishments under rehab programs.
The policy also covers establishment of critical infrastructures, and establishment of resources needed to protect the human dignity of detainees.
