EC seeks additional 500 officials for presidential elections

Elections Commission (EC)’s Vice Chairperson Ismail Habeeb, on Monday, revealed the commission is in need of an additional 500 officials to be based at voting centers in the presidential elections slated for September 9th.

Speaking to Sun, Habeeb said the commission has almost secured the required number of officials, while they are still in need of approximately 500 more people as reserve officials.

As per EC’s earlier announcement seeking officials – individuals submitting for the position must be 18, or older, must not hold a senior position in any political party and must not be actively involved in the campaign of any candidate or have family ties to any candidate.

The deadline for re-registration for voters who have registered to vote at resorts and foreign countries with insufficient number of voters is set to expire today.

EC’s Secretary General Hassan Zakariyya said the final voter list and the location of ballot boxes will be announced on August 18th.

283,272 people are eligible to vote in the election, slated to take place on September 9.

EC states they will place 604 ballot boxes for this year’s election; a number subject to change once the re-registration process is complete.

Eight candidates will face off elections;

1 – Former Home Minister Umar Naseer (Independent Candidate)

2 – Former Deputy Defense Minister Hassan Zameel (Independent Candidate)

3 – President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih (Maldivian Democratic Party)

4 – Male' City Mayor Dr. Mohamed Muizzu (People’s National Congress)

5 – Qasim Ibrahim (Jumhoory Party)

6 – Ahmed Faris Maumoon (Independent Candidate)

7 – Hulhudhoo MP Ilyas Labeeb (The Democrats)

8 – Colonel (Retired) Mohamed Nazim (Maldives National Party)
