Maldives Correctional Service, on Monday, stated that 200 prisoners from those detained in Male’ Prison, situated next to Dharumavantha School, have now been transferred to other prisons.

Home Ministry, following their decision to vacate Male’ Prison as the new Dharumavantha School building was developed at the land plot next to the prison, commenced efforts to transfer prisoners detained in Male’ Prison to other prisons early this year, ahead of the commencement of the new academic year.

Speaking to Sun, Commissioner of Prisons Ahmed Mohamed Fulhu said 200 prisoners detained in Male’ Prison have now been transferred to Hulhumale’ Prison and Himmafushi Prison.

“So far, 200 prisoners have been transferred to other prisons. Approximately 20 prisoners remain. Working on transferring them to other prisons at the earliest,” he said.

Previous attempts to change Male’ Prison to Thilafushi and Hulhumale’ have been unsuccessful.
