Independent presidential candidate Umar Naseer has begun a door-to-door campaign event in Male’ City.
The former home minister told Sun that during his visits on Monday, he saw the poor living conditions of the many residents of the populous city.
He said that he would not allow for people to live in such difficult conditions if he is elected to office, and would solve the housing crisis that hadn’t been solved in the past 15 years, in just five years.
“During my door-to-door visit today, I told the people I would solve the housing issue in five years,” he said.
Umar said that under his presidency, the selection process for award of housing would be free of political influence, and would be carried out by an independent committee.
He said it would eliminate government influence, and ensure the needy aren’t sidelined.
Umar said that during Monday’s visit, he learnt that he is accepted by the people, and treated in a positive light.
“They recognize I am a different ‘brand’ from other candidates. And the people believe that given my experience in politics and within the government, I am the most capable candidate,” he said.
Umar said he would make a difference in the upcoming election.
