The new political party spearheaded by Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed, ‘The Democrats’, on Sunday, sought approval from the Elections Commission (EC) for its formation.

The form was submitted to EC by West Henveiru MP Hassan Latheef.

Nasheed, following his loss to President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih in MDP’s presidential primary, formed a separate faction with the party, ‘Fikuregge Dhirun’. With the resignation of all lawmakers loyal to Nasheed, the faction is now headed in the path of its birth as a separate political party.

Speaking to the press after submission of the form, the party’s Spokesperson Afshan Latheef reiterated that a candidate from the party will contest in the presidential election slated for September 9th.

Although Nasheed’s loyalists have submitted the form seeking EC’s approval to form ‘The Democrats’ – Nasheed, himself, has yet to resign from MDP, where he serves as the party’s leader.

However, Nasheed’s loyalists, during a press conference to announce the new party last week, confirmed that the party was being formed under Nasheed’s direct guidance.
