Nasheed drops MVR 10M lawsuit against Mavota Shareef

Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed has dropped the MVR 10 million lawsuit he filed against Maradhoo MP Adam ‘Mavota’ Shareef for defamation.

The lawsuit was filed following a tweet by Shareef on November 25, 2022, in which he alleged Nasheed had attempted to carry out a massacre.

The case had been registered with the Civil Court in December 2022.

The Civil Court said on Tuesday that Nasheed told the court he wishes to drop the lawsuit.

“The plaintiff no said he no longer wishes to pursue the case,” said the court.

The court therefore decided the case dropped, given lack of objection from Shareef.

In the tweet in question, Shareef said that back during former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom’s administration, Nasheed plotted to carry out a mass killing with 50 casualties, and blame it on Maumoon.

He said that Nasheed had planned to carry out the mass killing by having foreign mercenaries brought to Maldives as reporters, and using them to kill 50 people during one of MDP’s mass protests.

Shareef said the plot was vetoed by the MDP parliamentary group.

The allegations are denied by Nasheed.
