Leader of Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) and Dh. Meedhoo MP Ahmed Siyam Mohamed has remarked that increasing the number of women in the political field is an important step forward in stopping abuse against women and establishing gender equality in the male-dominated field.

In a statement released today on the occasion of International Women’s Day, he extended greetings to women and girls across the country.

Siyam said that while such a day is being celebrated, it is important that everyone participate in celebrating the priceless services women have done the country and continue to do.

He further said that while the Maldives has been successful in establishing gender equality in some ways, more work should be undertaken to ensure gender equality in addition to preventing gender-based violence.

Siyam also said that increasing the participation of women in the political field is one of the most important steps toward establishing gender equality and stopping abuse faced by women. He highlighted that politics is one of the hardest fields for women to pursue a career in.

He further said that it is important to make it so that women can be fully included in the judicial and justice system. He finished by saying that he hopes that Maldives will be a peaceful place for the population as well as for the generation to come.
