President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has announced the government’s plans to develop community centres for seniors and the elderly across the country.
The announcement was made during his address at the function in Dharubaaruge to confer the National Award for Public Service on Thursday night.
He explained that the senior centres would serve as places for pensioners and the elderly to meet and socialize and offer various services ranging from social support and entertainment to wellness and help increase their participation and contributions in societal matters.
As per the president, the facility in Malé would be located on the old “Naadhee land,” which also served earlier as the People’s Majlis.
He expressed hope that the new centres, once completed, would serve as places that offer seniors and the elderly happiness and joy.
Last night’s ceremony saw presentation of the National Award for Public Service to 86 recipients.
National Award for Public Service, introduced in 2021, is the most prestigious award conferred by the President on individuals who have been serving the nation for over 35 years and are observed as diligent and steadfast employees who have contributed towards the development of their respective fields.
Recipients of the awards were selected by the National Awards Committee. Of the 86 recipients who were honored tonight, 25 were women. They included civil servants who had served in various capacities in government offices and institutions.
