Latvian traveler arrested with drugs slapped with 15-day remand

The Latvian traveler who was arrested for attempting to smuggle drugs into the Maldives by ingesting has been remanded in police custody for 15 days.

The traveler, identified as a 49-year-old Latvian male, was arrested on Tuesday.

He was arrested in an operation run by the police with assistance from Immigration and Customs, based on information received by police intel.

The latest case comes after a Swiss traveler was arrested with 2.2 kilos of cocaine and a Brazilian traveler with 2.6 kilos of cocaine last week. The Brazilian was deported while the Swiss suspect was remanded in custody of police for 15 days.

Immigration reserves the right to bar entry to people based on intel they use or may use Maldives as a transit point to traffic drugs under a regulation publicized on January 26th.
