Kaashidhoo MP Abdulla Jabir has resigned from Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) in which he had served as leader, and is working on forming a new political party.

Jabir told Sun on Monday that he has received permission from the Elections Commission (EC) to form his new party, which he has named ‘Green Party’.

“I am no longer a member of DRP. I will now move forward with Green Party. My goal is to keep politics in Maldives tight. To work in accordance with the party’s philosophies and policies,” he said.

EC made the decision to dissolve DRP back in December, citing failure to meet the 3,000-member requirement during the notice period.

Jabir’s efforts to form a new party comes after the High Court rejected the case DRP filed over the party’s dissolution.

DRP, the second political party founded in Maldives, was registered on July 15, 2005. It had been the political party to win the highest number of seats in the 2009 parliamentary elections with 28 seats.

But with Jabir’s resignation, the party now has no representatives at the Parliament.
