Over 600 ballot boxes will be installed in the presidential election scheduled for September, according to the Elections Commission (EC).

Speaking to Sun about the latest preparations for the election, EC’s vice chairman Ismail Habeeb said Monday that the commission expects over 21,000 new voters this year.

The number of eligible voters is expected to be above 280,000.

Habeeb said the EC aims to make arrangements to ensure all voters are able to cast their votes with ease.

“Based on previous experience, we are making arrangements to ensure voters are able to cast their votes and exit with ease and speed. We expect an average of 600 voters cast their votes to each box,” he said.

Habeeb said that reregistration will be opened in July.

35 ballot boxes had been installed in resorts during the 2018 presidential election. Habeeb said the commission expects the number will rise above 50 this time.

Habeeb said that ballot boxes will be kept in resorts and industrial areas if at least 30 voters reregister to the locations.

Ballot boxes will be kept overseas if at least 150 voters reregister to those locations.

“The purpose is to ensure as many people as possible can vote with ease,” he said.
