FAM’s President Bassam elected to AFC’s ExCo

The President of the Football Association of Maldives (FAM), Bassam Adeel, has been elected an Executive Committee member of the governing body of football in the Asian region, Asian Football Confederation (AFC).

Bassam was elected to the Executive Committee during AFC’s 33^rd congress held on Wednesday in Bahrain after competing with 47 countries. He was elected for the term 2023 to 2027.

During the congress, a president was elected to AFC, alongside vice presidents based on five zones and AFC’s six representatives who will serve on the FIFA Council for the next four years.

FAM has confirmed the election of Bassam to AFC’s ExCo.

Bassam kicked off his football career as a player at Club Valencia in 2003. He has achieved many successes after he turned to administrative work in the football arena. In this regard, he served as the administrator of Valencia between 2005 and 2007. He later served as the club’s vice president in 2013.

Bassam was first taking over FAM in 2015, when he was the general secretary. One year later, he was elected president of the association.

Maldivians who have previously been elected to AFC’s ExCo include former FAM President Ali Azim and former President of Maldives Olympics Committee Mohamed Shaveedh.

Although Bassam’s succeeded in the election – FAM remains in financial ruin. Multiple cases with respect to FAM’s finances have come to light in the past two years.

AFC is the governing body of Asian football and the largest of the six Confederations making up FIFA with 47 members.
