Italy decries India's delay over jailed marines

ROME (AP) — Italy is expressing "deep disappointment" over the delay by India's supreme court in the case of two Italian marines detained since February for the deaths of two Indian fishermen mistaken for pirates.

Premier Mario Monti's office insists Italy has jurisdiction because it contends the shooting occurred in international waters, and that the marines should be tried at home.

India contends that the cargo ship where the Italian marines were providing security was in Indian territorial waters.

The Italian government noted in a statement Friday that three months have passed since arguments were made in the court, which is deciding on the jurisdiction issue.

It said "deferring the ruling seems absolutely incomprehensible" to Italians. But it expressed confidence that India will bring a "positive and prompt solution" to the case.
