Addu City Mayor Ali Nizar.

After a lengthy hiatus, Addu City council announced decision to issue land plots this week.

Despite the atoll facing housing issues, a long time has passed without giving out any land. Land was last given from Hithadhoo in 2002.

Meanwhile it has been 15 years without issuing land from Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo, and 25 years for Feydhoo.

The City’s Mayor Ali Nizar said to Sun that preparations were underway to give land plots from Addu during this week.

According to the mayor, it has been decided that 100 plots from both Hulhudhoo as well as Meedhoo will be given, and 350 plots from Feydhoo.

He went on to note that they were working  to give either 300 or 400 plots Hithadhoo, but the has not been completely finalized as of now.

“Everything is going along together including land use plan. Working to open applications within this week.”

Additionally Nizar said that although this will not provide a complete solution, he hopes that those most in need of land will be able to get this time around.

“About a 1000 plots are being given at once from Addu. That will be a huge ease (to the housing situation).”

The government has decided to reclaim 90 hectares from Hithadhoo and 76 hectares from Maradhoo and Maradhoofeydhoo. It has also been decided to handover reclamation of Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo to MTCC
