Magnitude 7.7 quake strikes Indonesia; no threat to Maldives

There is no threat to Maldives from the magnitude 7.7 earthquake that struck the Tanimbar region in Indonesia, states Maldives Meteorological Service.

The quake struck at 10:47 pm on Monday (Maldivian time).

According to the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the quake was at a depth of 97 kilometers below the earth's surface.

The epicenter is located 6,418 kilometers from Male’, according to Maldives Meteorological Service.

The quake prompted Indonesia's seismological agency BMKG to issue tsunami warnings for nearby islands.

However, there is no threat to Maldives, said Maldives Meteorological Service.

There were no immediate reports of casualties.
