Nasheed arrives in Fuvahmulah on campaign tour

Leader of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and Parliament Speaker, former President Mohamed Nasheed arrives in Fuvahmulah City on January 3, 2023.

Leader of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and Parliament Speaker, former President Mohamed Nasheed travelled to Fuvahmulah City on Tuesday, as part of his campaign to win the party’s ticket for the upcoming presidential elections.

MDP is set to hold its presidential primary on January 28. It will see Nasheed compete against President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

Nasheed launched his campaign under the slogan “Fikuregge Dhirun” last week. He travelled to islands in HA. Atoll, HDh. Atoll, and Sh. Atoll as part of the first leg of his campaign tour.

He returned to Male’ City and held a rally Monday night. He has been deeply critical of President Solih and his administration during campaign rallies.

He travelled to the southern city of Fuvahmulah on Tuesday morning.

The upcoming primary has deepened the divide within MDP, with Nasheed’s loyalist accusing the government of attempting to influence the primary and undermine its fairness.

Nasheed’s allegations mainly stem from the removal of over 39,000 members from MDP’s membership register.

He has accused the government of removing members loyal to him in order to rig the primary.

MDP’s five-member complaints committee said Tuesday that the revision of the party’s membership register hadn’t been secretive, and was done fairely.
