President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, on Monday, remarked that he essayed daily to promote unity in the nation and solidarity among the people.

He made the remark whilst speaking at the official ceremony to mark the National Unity Day held at M. Kolhufushi.

In this regard, President Solih recalled the time when he took office as one of division, strife, and chaos, and one where political actors were actively destroying our unity, peace, and harmony. He described his primary responsibility after assuming the office as promoting unity, bringing people together and rekindling familial and societal bonds.

The President also looked back on the devastation of the 2004 tsunami and remembered the lives lost. Recalling the unity and solidarity Maldivian citizens showed following the disaster, and the efforts of the security and law enforcement agencies in their response – he also shared his personal experience of that tragic day, teary-eyed.

National Unity Day is marked on December 26 annually in celebration of the strong unity displayed following the devastation caused by the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami and in remembrance of the lives lost on that fateful day.
