Male’ City Council has made an announcement seeking sweepers to clean the roads of Male’ City and Vilimale’ for a monthly salary of MVR 9,600.

At present, public spaces in both Male’ City and Vilimale’ are cleaned by Waste Management Corporation Ltd (WAMCO), contracted for the work by Male’ City Council.

Male’ City Council has decided to assume the responsibility of cleaning public spaces in both areas upon the expiration of the contract made with WAMCO for the purpose on December 26.

In preparation for the date – the Council has announced job openings for 108 sweepers. The announcement was made on Tuesday.

They are seeking 80 sweepers from Male’ City and 28 sweepers from Vilimale’. The basic salary of the sweepers is stated as MVR 3,100. Alongside allowances inclusive of an overtime allowance of MVR 2,600 - they will receive a total salary of MVR 9,6000.

WAMCO presently employs 167 sweepers for both Male’ City and Vilimale’ – who are paid MVR 8,000 per month.

While City Council seeks lesser staff than WAMCO – they emphasized that a priority will be placed on WAMCO employees undertaking sweeping of the roads.

The deadline to submit applications is 14:00pm on next Thursday. Interviews will be held between December 25th and January 15th.

Speaking regarding the issue to Sun, Male’ City Mayor Dr. Mohamed Muizzu said that the council will be cleaning and collecting waste from the roads, parks, lagoon and public spaces only. He stressed that the council will not be collecting waste from households.

The council decided against renewing the agreement with WAMCO, citing they can do it at a rate cheaper than paying MVR 2.5 million to WAMCO annually. In response, WAMCO said that the council took the decision without consideration of the expenses that will be incurred for such an operation.

Moreover, WAMCO emphasized that all their employees were locals – whilst most of the city council’s employees were expatriates.

WAMCO was tasked with sweeping and cleaning the roads of Male’ City in December of 2019.
