2023 elections: EC and police discuss security at polling stations

Elections Commissions (EC) has begun preparations for the upcoming presidential elections, including engaging in discussions with the police regarding security measures at polling stations.

EC’s chairman Fuad Thaufeeq told Sun the commission requires the greatest assistance from the police when it comes to elections.

He noted the role of police in maintaining security at polling stations, transporting ballot boxes in polling stations overseas, and providing security for transport of ballot boxes.

Fuad said the commission held a meeting with the police to discuss security for the 2023 presidential elections.

He said the commission also held a meeting with the Tourism Ministry regarding making voting arrangements for resort workers.

“Police will escort electoral officials at all polling stations,” he said.

EC is set to sign a MoU with the police regarding the maintenance of security during elections.

EC has been allocated MVR 95 million to hold the presidential elections. Fuad recently the commission plans on seeking additional funds for the elections, as they expect it to go to a second round.
