President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, on Thursday, described the unity amongst Maldivian people as the nation’s strongest weapon against plots of adversaries to shake the small island nation.

In his address to the nation on the occasion of Victory Day, President Solih, drawing lessons from the events of November 3, 1988, said that Almighty Allah grants victory to those who commit jihad in his name with unwavering faith, courage, honesty, and conviction.

Another lesson he emphasized on was being vigilant against terrorist threats and plots by our adversaries to destabilize the nation. He underlined the need to foster generations of youths who will stand tall in defending the sovereignty and independence of Maldives when faced with such circumstances.

President Solih also remarked that commemorating Victory Day was to strengthen our resolve and uphold the principles and values that led to our success and victory over our adversaries. He also appealed to the members of Maldivian armed forces to promote unity on an individual and institutional level.

November 3, 1988, saw a brutal attack on Maldivian independence by discontent locals who were aided by foreign merceries – which marks one of the darkest days in Maldivian history, for the attack had claimed 19 lives. They include eight army personnel and 11 civilians.
