STO Makita National Junior Athletics Championship commences

STO Makita Junior Athletics Championship has begun in GDh. Thinadhoo.

The tournament's torch was lit by the President of Thinadhoo council, Saudh Ali, and Thinadhoo-born National long jump record holder, Nahil Nizaar in the tournament's opening ceremony held at the Thinadhoo Stadium.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Parliament member Abdulla Saneef stated that Thinadhoo is an island with a rich sporting history and that even 25 years ago players born in Thinadhoo represented Maldives in the National Football team.

He further stated that although the spark of football may have dimmed in the island, athletes from Thinadhoo continue to excel in Athletics.

He also stated that while there are plans to develop sports facilities in order to foster youth development in sports, it's even possible that tennis courts will be built in Thinadhoo in the future.

Speaking at the same ceremony, the Secretary General of Thinadhoo council, Mohamed Shareef, stated that Thinadhoo Council is an exemplary council and a role model to other local councils.

Moreover, he stated that the council has taken leadership and worked very hard to make the tournament a success, the Government and the citizens of Thinadhoo have given their full cooperation for this tournament.

This year's edition of the junior athletics tournament is the first tournament held in Thinadhoo since 2014. From 36 schools, 1057 athletes will be competing in four age categories.

Even though the opening ceremony of STO Makita Junior Championship was held on Saturday night, the events started Sunday morning. The championship will be held till the 27th of this month.
