Maldives Police Service has arrested an individual for alleged sexual abuse of two underage girls.

Speaking to Sun, a media official from Police said that they received reports of abuse against a 13-year-old girl and an 11-year-old-girl from a northern atoll on March 27.

Police further revealed that a 19-year-old Maldivian male was the one arrested on April 14 in connection to this. He has now been remanded for a period of 10 days.

The case is currently under investigation by the Police as well as the Ministry of Gender, Family and Social Services.

Cases of sexual abuse against minors surface often in Maldives, hence authorities urge to be cautious, and take all preventive measures.

In the month of February alone, Gender Ministry’s statistics show that 106 cases of violence against children were reported, including 23 cases of sexual abuse.
