After days, Male’ City Council begins repairing dangerous pothole on ring road

Male’ City Council, on Monday, has begun repairing a dangerous and deep pothole situated on ring road near the carnival area, in front of H. Gaadhoo Building, after days since its formation.

A businessman living in the area told Sun under the condition that his name not be disclosed, that it has been over one week since the pothole was formed. He further stressed that related government authorities have been informed on multiple occasions – despite which efforts to repair only commenced today.

Upon receiving reports regarding the pothole, a journalist from Sun had visited the scene to witness a dangerous road hazard.

In this regard, a large part of asphalt laid on the road had come off, whereas a deep hole had been formed in a manner it dangers the lives of pedestrians and those driving vehicles in that area.

The pothole is about three feet deep, and two feet wide.

The area where the pothole is situated is an area, commonly used by pedestrians and those driving vehicles, especially on holidays.

The formation of such a deep pothole at a commonly used area in Male’ City, which is crowded with vehicles and pedestrians, had raised concerns amongst owners of restaurants established in the area.

An employee at a restaurant in the area told Sun under the condition that the identity not be disclosed said that last Friday, the employee had witnessed the child being pulled out of the pothole after falling in.

“I witnessed a kid, around six-year-old, being pulled out of the pothole after falling in. The child was holding the mother’s hand whilst walking. At the time the child was pulled out, there were scraps on the leg and traces of blood,” the employee recalled.

Commenting regarding the matter, an official from Male’ City Council said that they had been informed of the formation of a deep pothole on ring road.

However, the official did not disclose why work on repairing the pothole was delayed.

The only remark the official had made was the fact that the Council had begun repairing the pothole today, after the matter was brought to their attention.
