Health Protection Agency (HPA), on Saturday, announced 1,589 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the total confirmed cases in Maldives to 148,580.
According to HPA’s figures, from the new cases; 400 cases were from the greater Male’ region, 843 cases from residential islands outside Male’, and 80 cases from operational resorts.
Meanwhile, the authority confirmed that 1,686 patients made full recoveries within the past 24 hours, increasing total recoveries to 130,649.
With these new developments, Maldives has 17,637 active cases, of which 52 patients were hospitalized.
Additionally, HPA stated that from the 5,617 samples tested for COVID-19 over the last 24-hours, 1,850 were from the greater Male' region. Hence, the positivity rate in the greater Male’ area is at 22 percent.
To date, Maldives has recorded 281 COVID-19 related deaths.
Maldives is currently battling a surge in COVID-19 cases, fueled by the new and more contagious omicron variant. Health experts expect the cases to peak by the end of January or the beginning of February.
