UNGA President Shahid visits Bahrain

President of the 76th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) and Maldivian Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid arrived in Bahrain on an official visit on Sunday. 

He met with the Bahrain's Foreign Minister Dr. Abdullatif Bin Rashed Al Zayani on Sunday. 

During the meeting, Shahid and Al Zayani discussed a range of international and regional issues including climate change, peace and security, COVID-19, women empowerment and youth. 

Shahid also commended Bahrain on its excellent diplomatic outreach and discussed collaboration on existing global challenges, from ensuring vaccine equity to addressing the climate crisis.

Following his meeting with Al Zayani, Shahid visited the UN Housing in Bahrain’s capital Manama, where he met the UN Resident Coordinator Mohamed Zarkani and the rest of the UN team in Bahrain, and discussed a wide range of issues including multilateralism, gender equality, climate change and COVID-19 recovery. 

He also met with Bahrain’s Special Envoy for Climate and Chief Executive of the Supreme Council for Environment, Dr. Mohamed bin Mubarak Bin Daina.  

Shahid and Daina discussed climate change, COP26 outcomes, and the special measures needed to protect small island states.

Shahid assumed office as UNGA President in September last year.
